Gut Health: Why it’s the key to clear skin, better moods, and long term wellness

At last month’s Breakfast Club, we chatted about gut health and it was so encouraging to see how inspired and curious everyone was to learn more. It really made me reflect on how, with today’s modern life stressors, ie, poor sleep, processed foods, fast paced routines, and constant pressure, we're struggling more than ever with our health, often without realising just how deeply our gut is involved.

Gut Health isn’t just about digestion

If you often feel bloated, uncomfortable, or just not quite yourself, your gut could be trying to tell you something. Many of us are told these symptoms are normal, that it’s okay to live with daily discomfort, irregular bowels, or mysterious skin flare ups. Your gut is deeply connected to your whole body and when it's out of balance, everything can feel off.

That’s why I created the Gut Restore Package, a personalised, supportive programme to help you uncover the root causes of your symptoms and restore your natural balance from the inside out.

Did You Know?

Our gut health is shaped not only by what we eat, but also by who and what we come into contact with every day, including where we live. Here are a few surprising ways your environment shapes your microbiome:

ree

• A 10 second kiss can transfer up to 80 million bacteria between partners, dramatically influencing each other’s microbiome.

• A single handshake transfers thousands of bacteria and can significantly affect your microbial diversity.

• Living with a dog or spending time outdoors boosts microbiome richness and can protect against inflammation and even anxiety.

• Over sanitising your environment can weaken your immune system by reducing microbial exposure and resilience.

So how does where you live affect your microbiome?

“From air quality and chemical exposure to sunlight and soil contact, your gut is constantly shaped by the world around you. Understanding these influences helps you make small, conscious choices that support microbial health, no matter where you live.”

Whether you live in a city or rural area, your surroundings play a role in shaping your gut health. Different environments expose us to different microbial factors:

In urban areas, common exposures include pollution from traffic fumes, electromagnetic frequencies from dense wireless networks, less time in green spaces, all of which may reduce gut microbial diversity or increase inflammation.

In countryside or agricultural areas, there may be more contact with beneficial soil microbes, animals, and plant life, but also greater exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and other agricultural chemicals that can disrupt gut balance.

Why focus on Gut Health?

Your gut influences far more than digestion. Research now links gut health to:

• Mood and mental clarity

• Immune system function

• Skin health (e.g. acne, eczema, psoriasis)

• Energy levels and sleep quality

• Hormone balance

• Stress response

If your gut is inflamed or imbalanced, it can affect every part of your wellbeing.

So why is it the key to clear skin, better moods & long term wellness?

Clear Skin Your skin is often a mirror of what’s happening inside your body. When the gut is inflamed or leaky, toxins and undigested particles can enter the bloodstream, triggering immune reactions that appear on the skin.

“Skin conditions are often signs of internal inflammation and imbalances in the gut microbiome. An imbalanced microbiome can impair your body’s ability to eliminate toxins effectively, causing them to be pushed out through the skin instead, resulting in flare ups like acne, eczema, or rashes.”

Better Moods Your gut produces neurotransmitters like serotonin (your happy hormone) and GABA (your body’s natural calming chemical), which help regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and support restful sleep.

Your gut bacteria help stabilise mood and blood sugar, support deep sleep, and reduce inflammation, all vital for better mental health.”

Long Term Wellness From nutrient absorption to immune defence and hormone recycling, your gut is central to sustainable health. It adapts daily based on diet, stress, environment, and social contact.

“Your gut is your body’s command centre for long term health: it produces essential vitamins, manages immune responses, recycles hormones through the estrobolome, and even responds to who you live with or kiss.”
